• Placing Multiple System Folders onto Your Hard Disk •
•••••••• Before you begin…
Some installation methods require you find the currently blessed System Folder on your hard disk. To do this, make sure you're viewing your hard disk window “by Icon”. Look for a folder that has a mini Macintosh picture on it. There can only be one blessed System Folder on any one volume. The blessed System Folder can have any name, but is usually named “System Folder”.
•••••••• Adding System 7 to a hard disk that already has a System 6 System Folder
I'll describe two ways to add System 7 to your hard disk, one upgrades a copy of your System 6 System Folder, and the other creates a new clean System 7 System Folder.
- To update a copy of your System 6 System Folder follow the steps below. Make sure you've run Apple's Compatibility Checker to remove any incompatible system extensions before installing System 7.
1. Select the currently blessed System 6 System Folder icon and choose Duplicate from the Edit menu. If there isn't enough room to duplicate the folder then you can try creating a clean System 7 System Folder, as described in the following section.
2. Verify that you have created an exact copy of your System 6 System Folder, and that the original System 6 System Folder is blessed (as shown by the mini Mac picture on the folder icon).
3. Insert the System 7 Installer disk (usually named “Install 1”) and double-click the Installer icon. Click OK in the window that appears.
4. In the Installer's Easy Install window select the hard disk that contains the duplicated System Folder, then click the Install button. After the installation is complete you'll restart your Mac using System 7. Your original System 6 System Folder is now a System 7 System Folder and the copy is untouched. You can change the name of either folder to better reflect their contents.
- To create a new clean System 7 System Folder on a hard disk, follow the steps below.
1. Find the currently blessed System Folder on the hard disk you wish to install System 7. A blessed System Folder has a mini Macintosh picture on the folder icon.
2. Change its name to any name EXCEPT “System Folder”.
3. Open this folder and drag the “Finder” file out of the folder window and drop it in the same window as the blessed System Folder icon.
4. Close the folder window. The folder icon should no longer have the mini Macintosh picture on it.
5. Insert the System 7 Installer disk (usually named “Install 1”) and double-click the Installer icon. Click OK in the first window that appears.
6. In the Installer's Easy Install window select the hard disk that previously contained the blessed System Folder. Make sure the wording in the window says “Click Install to place….” If it says “Click Install to update…” then you know you have not successfully deblessed the System Folder and you need to quit the Installer and go back to step 2.
7. After the installation has successfully completed and you've restarted your Macintosh, drag the “Finder” back into the folder you moved it from in step 3. If you don't do this the original System 6 System Folder will not show in System Picker's list.
•••••••• Adding System 6 to a hard disk that already has a System 7 System Folder
If your new Macintosh was introduced after the summer of 1991, then you may not be able to use System 6. The easiest way to determine this is to get the latest 6.0.X (6.0.8 at this writing) installation disk set from your dealer or bulletin board and start your Macintosh using the “System Tools” floppy disk. If a message appears telling you that the system software is too old or you get a “Sad Mac” while starting your Mac then forget about placing System 6 on your hard disk. Otherwise, follow the steps below.
1. Insert the System 6.0.X “System Tools” floppy disk into your Macintosh.
2. Rename any folder named “System Folder” on your hard disk to something else.
3. Drag the folder named “System Folder“ from the “System Tools” floppy disk to your hard disk. This will copy the folder to your hard disk.
4. Use System Picker to switch to the System 6 System Folder that you just copied to your hard disk. Once running on System 6, you can restart your Macintosh using the System 6 “System Tools” floppy disk and use the Installer to add additional features (such as networking software) if you wish.
